Our conductor - Peter Ford
Peter Ford began his musical career as a violinist, studying with Daphne Moody
and later with Angus Gibbon whilst a student at Royal Holloway, University of
London. He has been privileged to perform in the masterclasses and workshops
of renowned musicians such as Emanuel Hurwitz and Dr Robert Jacoby, as well
as members of the Fitzwilliam and Medici Quartets.
Following serious injury Peter has focused his efforts on the piano, studying with
Mark Marshall. He has a particular love of vocal music and works professionally
with a number of singers. Engagements as an accompanist have taken him as far
afield as the Tíbrá Festival (Reykjavík), with tenor Ólafur Rúnarsson, and the
University of Newcastle, as an examination accompanist. He has also worked as
a repetiteur for OperaLabUK, under the direction of international tenor Austin
Gunn.
Conducting studies were undertaken both privately with Colin Howard and at the
Canford Summer School, overseen by the eminent George Hurst. Peter spent six
years as the Musical Director of Winterbourne Opera, and productions include
Carmen, Le Nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, Cosi Fan Tutte, Dido and Aeneas,
and Die Fledermaus.
Upon leaving Winterbourne Opera in 2006, Peter was appointed Musical Director
of the Larkhill Choral Society, and in the spring of 2009 he accepted the
directorship of the Andover Choral Society. He was appointed Conductor of Capel
Choral Society in April, and is looking forward to the challenge of the Leith Hill
Musical Festival.

Our accompanist - Anthea Smallwood
Anthea Smallwood has been involved with choirs since the age of seven and
accompanying from the age of 13. She studied at the Royal College of Music in
London and then took a teachers’ Certificate of Education at the University of
Exeter. She has worked in secondary schools as a music teacher and currently
works for Surrey County Arts as a peripatetic music teacher.
She has accompanied Capel Choral Society for nearly 25 years and neighbouring
Beare Green & Newdigate Choral Society since 1988.
